iA Writer – initial thoughts

by | Apr 23, 2021

Well, I’ve tried out iA Writer, and it’s certainly different from writing everything in Microsoft Word.

It takes a bit of getting used to, and I’m not convinced I’m ready to only type with one font in a plain window. On the other hand, I do really like the ‘focus’ mode – I’ve got it set so only the current paragraph is in black text, and other paragraphs are greyed out.

The other thing I really like so far is that it keeps the line I’m currently typing in the middle of the window. So, as I type and the text lines appear, they scroll up so I don’t have to move where I’m looking. Ditto, when I move my cursor back to an earlier paragraph, it moves to the right place on the page. Very neat, particularly compared to Word, where it’s easy to completely lose track of where you are.

I haven’t really done much more than type, to be honest, but I’m coming round to the idea of using this in my daily writing. And the library, favourites and smart folders features look intriguing… watch this space.
