Solar windows: the future’s bright

by | Nov 28, 2021

It sounds simple, but it’s taken years to develop – instead of solar panels on your roof, why not use your windows to filter out some of the sunlight, and generate electricity? Think about how many windows there are in any city, and in particular in large office blocks.

Even better, how about making electricity from just the non-visible parts of sunlight (infra-red and UV), so the visible light gets through?

This is what Ubiquitous Energy, a US firm, has done – it claims that its solar windows can generate about half as much energy as a solar panel of the same area, which sounds good to me. There are multiple other companies trying to do the same thing, but UE seems to have a technology lead (and some key patents).

It will be interesting to see if they can scale their company and win the big customers needed to make this technology really take off.
